Australian Scholarships is an Australian Government initiative that will double scholarship opportunities in Australia and the Asia-Pacific region. Australian Scholarships will bring under the one umbrella existing scholarship programmes managed by the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID) and the Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST) and introduce a new AusAID managed programme - Australian Leadership Awards.
A brief overview of each of the component programmes of Australian Scholarships follows:

Australian Development Scholarship (ADS) is managed by AusAID. It is an existing programme enabling people from eligible countries to gain higher level knowledge and skills to promote development in their home country.

Australian Leadership Awards (ALA) is managed by AusAID. It is a new regional award for the Asia Pacific region that is focused on developing future leaders.

Endeavour Programme is managed by DEST. It is an existing programme, which has been greatly expanded to develop mutual understanding through study, research and professional development to create international education experiences. Click here for a summary of Endeavour Awards for 2007.

Endeavour International Post Graduate Research Scholarships (EIPRS) are administered by the International Office. http://www.usyd.edu.au/fstudent/postgrad/costs/ for more detail. An Endeavour IPRS scholarship provides tuition fees and is available to individuals from the Americas, Europe, Asia and the Middle East wishing to undertake postgraduate research studies. The studies undertaken must be in areas identified as part of the University current and emerging research strengths. Applications are assessed on academic merit and research potential. In addition to the Endeavour IPRS, the University of Sydney awards International Postgraduate Award (IPA) to Endeavour IPRS holders. The IPA is a living allowance/stipend scholarship awarded to all Endeavour IPRS holders. Applications for the Endeavour IPRS are available during May and August each year. Application forms maybe downloaded from the University of Sydney International Student Scholarships information website during May and August. The closing date for the Endeavour IPRS is 15 September each year. All Endeavour IPRS applications will also be considered for the IPA (no separate application is required)..See http://www.backingaustraliasfuture.gov.au/guidelines/documents/scholarship_guide.pdf specific information on the IPRS - in particular Chapter 4. A student must be undertaking study in a subject area identified by the HEP (High Education Provider) as one of its areas of research concentration.

Endeavour Australia-Asia Post Graduate Student Awards. These awards are for students wishing to undertake a higher degree at an Australian institution or to carry out research in Australia that counts towards a degree program at a home country institution. The focus is on Asia, with an award being made annually to applicants from China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam. The award is valued at up to A $50,000 and funds the first year or semester of a program that may last from a semester to three years. By 2007, thirty awards will be made yearly.

Endeavour Australia-Europe Post Graduate Student Awards. These awards are for students wishing to undertake a higher degree at an Australian institution or to carry out research in Australia that counts towards a degree program at a home country institution. Fourteen scholarship awards are available annually to applicants from the EU and one to applicants from Norway, Switzerland and Croatia. The value of the award is up to A$50,000 and funds the first year or semester of a program that may last from a semester to three years.

CAS scholarships are advertised by the Research Office in January/February and sometimes again in May as requested by the Personnel Manager. (Admin Officer in the School is to be issued with a copy of all paperwork.) The stipend is the same as the APAI. When applications (these must contain certified copies of academic transcripts, CV and proof of citizenship) close the Personnel Manager will arrange a selection meeting with the Research Director and academics. Applicants must be enrolled with The University of Sydney to be eligible. The Research Office (RSO) will then issue an offer letter, including a scholarship commencement form after the RSO has confirmed that the selected candidate has been accepted as a full-time research degree candidate by the relevant Faculty. The offer letter includes the scholarship commencement form.

Australian Postgraduate Awards Industry (APAI) may sometimes be offered by CAS via an industry grant. Procedures are the same as for CAS scholarships but in addition the RSO will need to confirm the candidate is eligible for an APAI in accordance with ARC guidelines. The student will also need to sign an Intellectual Property agreement, which the BLO will send.

Australian Postgraduate Awards (APA) are for Australian Citizens (closing dates are around October, and general requirements are for a first class undergraduate honours degree) See Research Office for further information.

UPA University of Sydney Postgraduate Awards (UPAs) are similar to APAs in terms of tenure and benefits.

The Peter Nicol Russell (PNR) Postgraduate Scholarship in Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering is a top-up scholarship for a successful APA or UPA applicant. Around $9,000 pa annum for the duration of the APA/UPA.

Sydney Engineering Postgraduate Scholarships These scholarships are available for postgraduate students who have been successful at winning an Australian Postgraduate Award (APA). Faculty Scholarships (previously called fee Waivers) may be considered for International Students who have been awarded a CAS/Other scholarship. See the Personnel Manager.

CAS Undergraduate Intern or Vacation Scholarships are sometimes offered in November. The value is around $5,000. Please see the Personnel Manager if you wish to advertise one of these scholarships.
